Mount Rainier High School
Des Moines, Washington

Completed 2008
BLRB Architects

The new Mount Rainier High School took advantage of the dramatic views of its namesake, Mt Rainer, to the southeast. A student courtyard designed by Thomas Rengstorf & Associates frames views of the mountain. The courtyard space includes an amphitheatre for student gatherings and outdoor classroom lessons. Informal seating on salvaged boulder surrounds the more formal amphitheatre. Boulders were salvaged from the previous campus' quad and additional boulders discovered during excavation.
